Having started in the CG industry 18 years ago as an animator, back when everyone was a CG generalist, my path has taken me through several disciplines including animation, modelling,  FX, compositing and lighting.  

My role in lighting has made me very conscious of the part textures and shaders play in producing high quality images, I have recently spent a lot of effort trying to learn how to become more proficient at creating textures and manipulating shaders.
